The SKArating Board’s ambition is to become the first interior fit-out and refurbishment project assessment and benchmarking system to offer clients a complete triple bottom line framework, integrating environmental, social and economic outcomes. This will enable projects across the market to define, assess and demonstrate sustainability performance in a more holistic and meaningful way.
Each pillar will be assessed through its own dedicated scheme, stand separate to the other two pillars, be optional, and designed with focused criteria to address specific sustainability impacts:
-
Environmental schemes address issues such as energy efficiency, embodied carbon, circularity, materials, and pollution
-
Social & Wellbeing schemes focus on health, inclusivity, accessibility, and occupant wellbeing
-
Economic & Value schemes examine financial performance, long-term value, and economic resilience
Currently, the Office Environmental v2.0 scheme is live and available for assessments, having been streamlined to 83 good practice measures with a strengthened focus on Net Zero carbon alignment and Circular Economy principles. Retail v1.0 and Higher Education v1.0 schemes are also live and used for on-going assessments in these sectors.
The Social & Wellbeing schemes are under development, with an expected launch in Q1 2027, whilst the Economic & Value scheme will follow thereafter.
This three-pillar approach enables projects to measure, drive, and balance all sustainability impacts comprehensively. Clients have the flexibility to use each scheme independently or together, depending on their project priorities and sustainability objectives. Each completed assessment results in a separate certificate, clearly demonstrating your project's achievements within that specific pillar of sustainability.
