The SKArating Board's ambition is for SKArating to become the first interior fit-out and refurbishment project assessment and benchmarking system to offer clients a complete triple bottom line framework, integrating environmental, social and economic value outcomes. This will enable projects across the market to define, assess and demonstrate sustainability performance in a more holistic and meaningful way.

SCHEME AIMS

  • To ensure that every project assessed under the Economic & Value scheme captures the full breadth of value generated by an interior fit-out or refurbishment — spanning financial performance, occupant productivity, brand value, social value and wider economic impact.
  • To recognise that economic value extends beyond cost and return on investment, encompassing the long-term benefits to occupants, organisations, communities and supply chains affected by a project.
  • To integrate life-cycle costing and whole-life assessment of design and operational decisions, ensuring that value is considered across the full project life cycle and not just at the point of delivery.
  • To reflect current good practice in economic and value impact assessment, with measures, criteria and a ranking system developed in collaboration with industry.

The SKArating Economic & Value schemes will cover impacts across the project life cycle, including all relevant stakeholders — from building occupants and client organisations to local communities and supply chains.

VALUE OF INTRODUCING THE ECONOMIC & VALUE SCHEMES

  • Fit-for-purpose scheme for the market
  • Affordability for average-sized fit-out projects
  • Clear lines of responsibility within project boundaries
  • Coverage of gaps between existing schemes
  • Consistent methods across sustainability pillar assessments
  • Single integrated scheme rather than needing multiple schemes
  • Reduced overlap and duplication
  • Coordinated industry and market progress
  • Market-specific relevance, including suitability for the UK and EU market

INITIAL SECTOR SCHEME

This first scheme under the Economic & Value pillar of sustainability is planned to enter development following the completion of the Social & Wellbeing schemes. It will address impacts on occupant performance, measure social value, and capture all other relevant forms of value associated with office and workplace environments. Life-cycle costing and whole-life assessments of design and operational decisions will be included in the initial brief.

The scheme's scope is also expected to reflect the broader impact of projects on local communities, supply chains and responsible procurement, particularly where these relate to economic issues and justice. Its measures, criteria and ranking system will be developed to reflect current good practice in economic and value impact assessment.

DON'T SEE YOUR SECTOR SCHEME?

As with all SKArating schemes, new sectors will be brought on board where there is a clear industry interest and need. If you would like to champion a scheme for your sector, we'd welcome the conversation.
